Lydia Hamilton

Lydia Hamilton, a free woman of European and African descent, was born at Russell Tavern on the outskirts of Gettysburg around 1813. After separating from her husband, Jacob Smith, Lydia moved to Lancaster, where she kept house for ardent abolitionist lawyer-legislator Thaddeus Stevens, a former long-time resident of Gettysburg. The two were also reportedly active facilitators of the Underground Railroad in South Central Pennsylvania. During and after the Battle of Gettysburg, Hamilton collected food and supplies for the wounded from neighbors and friends and delivered them to area field hospitals. Lydia, whom some considered to be Stevens’ common-law wife, was by his side when he died in 1868.
