Thaddeus Stevens

Thaddeus Stevens, “The Great Commoner,” was one of the most prominent citizens of Gettysburg in the first half of the 19th century. A country lawyer by trade and an entrepreneur in spirit, Stevens was a key figure in establishing Pennsylvania’s free public education system and a fierce and outspoken advocate for the abolition of slavery. After relocating to nearby Lancaster, Stevens served in the House of Representatives, where he was a catalyst for the ratification of the 13th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution, which abolished slavery and granted due process to all male citizens, regardless of race. Stevens himself insisted upon being buried in Shreiner’s Cemetery in Lancaster because it was one of the few cemeteries in the area that did not restrict burials based on race.
