Lloyd Watts
Lloyd F.A. Watts moved with his family from Maryland to Pennsylvania when he was a young child and proudly served with Company B of the 24th U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War. Notably, as part of his service, he acted as a guard for Confederate prisoners at Cape Lookout, Maryland. After the war, he returned home to Gettysburg with the rank of sergeant and went on to teach at the town’s first “colored” school and serve as a deacon at St. Paul’s A.M.E. Zion Church, a reconstructed version of which still stands on South Washington Street. Watts also helped found Lincoln Cemetery, a burial ground for local Black soldiers and citizens, in 1867. He was interred there in 1918.
