Tillie Pierce
Matilda Alleman Pierce, known to her friends and family as Tillie, was just 15 years old when Confederate and Union forces streamed into her hometown. Two of her older brothers had enlisted in the Union Army (one of whom served in Company K) and she was counted among the many locals who provided food, water, and medical care to the wounded when the war came to Gettysburg. Years later, Pierce published a harrowing account of her experiences entitled What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle. “The whole landscape had been changed and I felt as though we were in a strange and blighted land,” she wrote.
