Frederick Douglass

After escaping from his enslavement in Maryland, Frederick Douglass became a leader of the abolitionist movement known for his oratorical skill and incisive antislavery writings. Soon after the Civil War ended, Douglass came to Gettysburg to speak at Agricultural Hall, which once stood at the corner of High and Franklin streets. It was reported that despite receiving death threats, he delivered a powerful speech comparing Abraham Lincoln to William the Silent. His words had a profound impact on the “large and appreciative audience” that was in attendance that day. Douglass told the crowd that if Lincoln could speak about his assassins, he would say, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”
