James McAllister
Committed abolitionist James McAllister owned a mill south of Gettysburg, on Rock Creek, that he offered up for use as a key Underground Railroad outpost mere miles from the Mason-Dixon line. Early meetings of the Adams County Anti-slavery Society also took place at the mill. Fugitive slaves seeking freedom would hide in the cog pit of the mill, relatively safe from “slave catchers” while they rested for the next leg of their journey north to freedom. The McAllister farm lay just behind Union lines at Culp’s Hill and Spangler’s Spring and was used as a field hospital during and after the battle. A number of soldiers were buried on the grounds.
