Virginia Wade

“Ginnie” Wade was kneading dough destined to become bread for Union soldiers when she was killed by a stray bullet. She and her mother had moved in with her sister on Cemetery Hill to help with a newborn baby when the house got caught in the crossfire of skirmishing at the edge of town. Wade has the distinction of being the only civilian killed by fire throughout the bloody three-day Battle of Gettysburg. In 1882, her mother successfully petitioned the government to grant her a pension for her daughter’s death.
